Quote of the Day
Coming up in the October Issue of Sound & Video Contractor
"The sound requirements for a political convention fall in line with those for a rock concert: prime seating is on the floor, and robust, full-range music reinforcement is required throughout the arena." - from "Conventional Wisdom" by Bruce Borgerson. Hot Off The Wire
Auction Benefits H.E.A.R., HEI Sound Partners
The Mix Foundation for Excellence in Audio will present the TEC Awards Music and Sound Auction (members.ebay.com/aboutme/hear) on eBay, starting on October 21 and running through November 2, 2004. The auction will coincide with the 20th Annual Technical Excellence and Creativity Awards (www.mixfoundation.org/TEC20), to be held on Saturday, October 30 at the San Francisco Marriott. The online auction will be managed by Hearing Education and Awareness for Rockers (H.E.A.R.; www.hearnet.com), a nonprofit dedicated to informing musicians and the public about the prevention of hearing impairment in the music environment. Proceeds will benefit H.E.A.R., as well as the Sound Partners campaign of the House Ear Institute (www.hei.org) in Los Angeles, a hearing conservation program cofounded by the Mix Foundation (www.mixfoundation.org/news.html) in 1997. For information about auction items, go to www.svconline.com/newsletters/avinstall_extra1005_auction.

Sabine Wireless and Crestron Team Up
Sabine (www.sabine.com) and Crestron (www.crestron.com) are partnering to unite Sabine's 2.4 GHz Wireless software and firmware into a Crestron system environment. "This partnership gives system designers the opportunity to control our wireless in a whole new way," says Rob Rothschild, Sabine's sales and marketing director. "Specifiers can now call for dedicated signal processing on every wireless mic, all at the touch of a Crestron panel." Crestron says it believes in an open platform approach, which allows partner manufacturers' products to perform as plug-and-play devices in a Crestron system. Sabine's new SWM7000 2.4 GHz Smart Spectrum wireless microphone systems are for the broadcast, theater, presentation, teleconferencing, and music industries. Fits and Starts Productions Spreads the Audio Word
Fits and Starts Productions (www.fitsandstarts.com) is heading down the aisle into churches to marry technology and education. Partners Hector La Torre and Mike Sokol tour the United States each year to over 36 sites in 6 regions, preaching the gospel of technology and the importance of knowing how to use it. Host sites include Full Sail, Tempe Conservatory, New York University, Peabody Conservatory, University of Massachusetts Lowell, Institute of Audio Research, Seattle Art Institute, Berklee College of Music, and NARAS (Grammy) chapters. Fits and Starts Productions began educating consumers five years ago, when it realized that the sophistication of audio technology was increasing rapidly, but manufacturers weren't spending the time or the money to educate their consumers. Although equipment sponsors change from tour to tour, current sponsors include DTS, Steinberg, SRS, Sennheiser, DPA, Turbosound, Rane, Electro-Voice, Crown, Midas, and Tannoy. Two types of audio workshops are offered during the year: HOW-To Surround Audio Workshops and HOW-To Church Audio Workshops. Both workshops offer participants the opportunity to touch, feel, and hear live audio systems. For details about the workshops, go to www.svconline.com/newsletters/avinstall_extra1005_church.

Jeron Electronic Systems Sentinel
Jeron (www.jeron.com) has released the Sentinel sound detector substation for the Spectrum 430/460 intercom system. Calls from the Sentinel station to the master station are placed upon recognition of a qualified audio event, such as a scream, a yell for help, or another distress call or by pressing the call button. The tamperproof speaker and call button combined with heavy-gauge, stainless-steel construction make this station ideal for use in parking garages, correctional facilities, and other areas where the station may be subject to physical abuse. Programmable attributes such as sensitivity range, frequency range, sound event qualification and call window times, extended sound reject and ambient adjust times, and the number of detected sound events work together to help eliminate the placement of erroneous calls by noises such as car horns or sirens and ensure that screams or other distress signals are recognized and place calls.
