Compaction Equipment
Compactor
Sakai introduces the CV550 Series compactor, which features a centrifugal output of more than 50,000 pounds. The triangular track drive system allows the unit to climb 45-degree slopes while compacting, the manufacturer says. The compactor is powered by a fuel-efficient, water-cooled 169-hp turbocharged Isuzu diesel engine. Two configurations are available: the CV550D with a smooth drum for semi-cohesive soils and the CV550T padfoot drum for cohesive soils.

Reversible plates
Wacker announces the WM engine series on its smaller reversible plate series. The BPU 2540 (pictured) is powered by the 6-hp WM 170, and the BPU 3050 is powered by the 9-hp WM 270 engine. These engines offer a chain-driven, overhead-cam design designed to deliver improved performance, longer life, easy starting and quieter operation. The reversible plates are designed for confined area compaction of granular and mixed soil. The BPU 2540 and BPU 3050 offer fully hydraulic forward and reverse operation with spot compaction for easy compaction in tight areas and maneuverability for all applications.

Concrete Equipment
Surface planer
General Equipment's SP8/G Series II surface planer is designed for a range of applications including milling misaligned sidewalks and joints, removing thermo and cold plastic markings and prepping floors for new coating applications. The unit has a maximum cutting depth of 5/8 inches, a cutting width of 8 inches and a cutting proximity to a vertical wall of 3 1/4 inches. Cutting depth is adjusted using a screw-type, positive-locking depth selector, and the wheels located behind the drum make it easier to cut through high spots.

Product Spotlight
Potain HDT 80 completes Pittsburgh expansion project
A tight, urban jobsite prompted a local lifting services provider to specify a Potain HDT 80 self-erecting tower crane for a department store conversion project in downtown Pittsburgh, Pa. Known as the Piatt Place, this well-known commercial site recently underwent redevelopment to transform it to a high-end condominium and retail complex.

The HDT 80 worked for sub-contractor Century Steel Erectors and helped add two stories to the existing five-story building. Local Potain dealer American Contractors supplied the HDT 80 to Century Steel.

Chuck McKee, project manager at Century Steel, said a lack of space forced the company to look at alternatives to its normal lifting choices.

"We chose the HDT 80 because lifting work had to take place in a narrow street. Space was very limited," he said. "But with the small outrigger footprint, we could set up the crane and keep pedestrians moving."

Construction work took place in 30-foot x 30-foot bays. The heaviest loads were header beams, weighing up to 4,500 pounds each. The crane also lifted 1,500-pound infill beams and bundles of metal floor decks weighing up to 4,500 pounds.

Another benefit that Century took advantage of was the crane's remote control. McKee said it allowed them to save on labor costs "By using the remote control, we were able to eliminate the radio man," he said.

Century Steel was involved in the construction of the original department store back in 1998. The 150-foot x 150-foot square building was initially 70 feet above street level. This has increased 35 feet with the addition of the extra floors. Reinforcement work started in June 2007, while the crane handled construction work during September 2007.
