Earth-Moving
Compact excavator
New Holland introduces the
E15 (pictured), E25, E30, E35 and E50 compact excavators, which feature
an independent boom-swing mechanism. One pump is dedicated to the swing
circuit, which enables simultaneous operation of the boom, arm or bucket
without any effect on swing operation. With their zero-tail-swing
design, these compact excavators can move and work in tight spaces
without damaging the machine or the jobsite. They are suited for digging
around obstacles, near foundations and against walls. The models range
from 3,240 to 10,275 pounds and provide bucket breakout forces up to
11,128 pounds.

For Contractors
Augers
Established and family-owned since 1910, Danuser has manufactured drilling
machines since 1943. The company offers 24 drive units, which are backed
by a 5-year warranty. Models range from 6 to 60 gpm at 1,500 to 5,000
psi. Torque ranges from 1,039 to 8,759 foot-pounds. Danuser augers are
available in 2-inch round, 2-9/16-inch round, and 2-inch hex with
diameters ranging from 4 inches to 48 inches.

Portable generators
Wacker's
new line of premium generators offers dependable power when and where
you need it. The eight models range from 2,500 to 6,600 Watts and are
designed for excellent voltage regulation and superior motor starting
ability, allowing operators the ability to start larger tools. The GP
line offers a compact design, but a heavy-duty one-piece frame provides
full protection. These generators are also quiet thanks to a large
muffler and an auto idle control with time delay on the larger units
automatically reduces the engine to a low speed, reducing fuel
consumption, noise and wear on the connected electrical loads.

Trailer
The 2-wheel, 6,000-pound capacity Lo Riser inclining platform
trailer from Advance
Metalworking features a 74-inch by 11-foot, 4-inch load-carrying
platform that can be hydraulically lowered to ground height. The
built-in ramp allows smooth, drive-on access for quickly loading or
unloading cargo or equipment. When lowered, the trailer allows a minimum
5-degree angle suited for low ground clearance or reduced gradeability
vehicles. Simple operation, flexibility and enhanced safety allow one
person to load and transport cargo.

Portable ventilation
blower
The EP8 portable electric air ventilation blower from General Equipment is designed to
make it easy to conform to strict OSHA regulations relating to
occupational safety and health standards in confined spaces. It works
for supplying air around construction sites, removing toxic and noxious
gases from sewers and confined areas, detecting sewer line leaks,
cleaning tanks and vaults, and cooling personnel in utility trenches.
Powered by a 1/3-hp, single-phase electric motor rated for continuous
service, the EP8 operates from either a grounded 110 AC outlet or an
appropriate size AC electric generator. A replaceable fuse system is
included for component and operator safety.

Combihammer
The Hilti TE Combihammer is
designed for drilling holes in rebar dowels or anchor bolts in concrete,
stone and masonry, or for moderate chiseling on concrete and masonry.
The TE has a 1,050-watt motor and hammering mechanism for drilling up to
1-inch diameter holes. The tool's D-grip function improves balance,
handling and comfort. Equipped with constant motor electronics, the TE
50 provides a constant drilling speed despite power-source fluctuations.
The TE 50 comes equipped with Hilti's theft protection system, which can
help reduce insurance and replacement costs. The system consists of a
company card, activation key and an electronic module inside the tool.
When activated, the tool, if stolen, will lock after 20 minutes and
cannot be re-started without the activation key.

Dust collector
The Pulse-Bac PB1500X dust collector from CDCLarue Industries delivers up to 450
cfm and is equipped with Pulse-Bac technology, which automatically
cleans the filters and prevents clogging. The PB1500X features dust
extraction capabilities, which eliminate contact with debris and allow
the user to extract the containments and then discard them without
turning off the vacuum or stopping production.

Engine
Iveco Motors of North
America's NEF N60 ENT NG natural gas engine for the power generation
market is a 4-stroke spark-ignited cycle with a 2-valve-per-cylinder,
6-cylinder in-line configuration. The liquid-cooled natural gas engine
has a 5.9L displacement and was designed with low fuel consumption, as
well as low noise levels. The engine, available as a stand-alone engine
or gen-drive, has a variable speed rating of 180 hp at 2,300 rpm and a
gen-drive rating of 120 kWm at 1,800 rpm.

For Homeowners/Light Contractors
Angle grinder
The W6-115 from Metabo weighs
4.5 pounds and, combined with its small diameter grip of 2 3/16-inches,
is built for use in applications ranging from machinery installation and
metal stud construction to maintenance, plumbing, mechanical and
electrical work. This 4 1/2-inch economy angle grinder has a 650-watt,
6-amp motor and boasts a no-load speed of 11,000 rpm.

Driver
The 10.8V Litheon Impactor fastening driver from Bosch Power Tools and Accessories
weighs in at 2.2 pounds and delivers 60 percent more torque than an
18-volt drill/driver, the company says. The Impactor can fit in a tool
belt pouch or pocket and measures 6 inches tall by 6 1/2 inches long. A
Bosch motor and all-metal gears produce 1,800 rpm and 3,000 bpm, and
turn the powerful hammer and anvil system to deliver 800 inch-pounds of
torque. Additional features include a bright LED work light specially
positioned in the nose of the tool to light up the work area. A hex
quick-change chuck allows for instant changes from drill to driver bits.
A variable speed trigger offers control over speed for varying
applications, while the tool's ergonomic design, which includes
soft-grip, adds to user comfort over long periods of time.

Seventeen-Year-Old Deere Loader Keeps
on Ticking
Equipment owners expect their machines to last a long time, but a
1990 John Deere 544E wheel loader
owned by American Crystal Sugar Company in East Grand Forks, Minn., has
gone above and beyond the call of duty, with more than 72,000 productive
hours under its beefy belt.
The loader, which works at American Sugar Crystal's sugar beet
processing plant in East Grand Forks, charges hoppers with the lime rock
and metallurgical coke used to produce 300,000 tons of sugar annually.
It also scoops up lime waste and hauls it to a disposal site about a
mile from the plant.
"This 544E has outlasted every piece of equipment at any of our five
factories," said factory engineer Bruce Keifenheim. "It's great when a
piece of machinery keeps costs down so low. This loader is a far cry
from some of our machines. When a machine goes down, we have to rent or
contract the work with an outside operator. Our 544E has definitely
saved us money."
The secret of the 544E's longevity has been engine oil changes every 10
days and regular preventive maintenance, according to Kevin Grove,
service manager at Deere dealer RDO Equipment, which performs a
maintenance check and inspection of the machine annually.
"For that application, most people would have owned three or four
loaders in that time-American Crystal Sugar people are sticklers about
maintenance, and it pays dividends," Grove said.
The machine's engine has been overhauled twice. The transmission wasn't
touched until 1999, when the dealer installed a torque-converter
bearing. The original hydraulic pumps lasted 44,600 hours before being
replaced, Grove said.
Keifenheim said the company has no near-term plans to trade for a new
loader. "It's in decent mechanical condition. It's just old," he said.
"Our mechanic thinks the machine can go for a few more years, so we may
break the 100,000-hour mark."
