Earth-Moving
Mini-excavators
Yanmar introduces the Vi027-5
and Vi035-5 (pictured), two new mini-excavators in the 6,300- and
7,700-pound class. Features include increased breakout forces with dig
depths of 9 feet, 6 inches and 11 feet, 4 inches, and a universal boom
design that is 1.5 times thicker than previous models. The Vi035-5 model
features an increase in horsepower of 3.3-hp and optional air
conditioning is available when the cabin is ordered. Both models offer
improved fuel economy and larger fuel tanks.

Mini-skid steer
The Ditch Witch SK650
mini-skid steer features a 31-hp Kubota turbo diesel engine and directs
20 net hp to the attachment. Both the fuel and hydraulic tanks are
mounted on the outside of the machine's frame. Because the fuel tank is
exterior-mounted, the company was able to make the tank larger. With the
8-gallon capacity, most jobs can be completed without stopping to
refuel. Quick-disconnect attachment fittings enable attachments to be
changed with the hydraulic system under pressure, which speeds
productivity. The SK650 is also equipped with a foot pedal auxiliary
control that allows operators to drive the attachment by foot, freeing
up their hands to control depth and ground speed.

Submersible pumps
ITT Flygt recently introduced
its latest generation of stainless-steel submersible dewatering and
solids-handling pumps. Designed to be extremely wear resistant, robust
and easy to maintain, the pumps operate in the pH range of 2 to 10,
making them well suited to acid-mine drainage, wash-water sumps in
pickling bath processes in the steel industry, as well as many other
corrosive environments. Model BS-2740 (pictured) operates on three-phase
230/460/575 V, and is rated at 9 hp. The high-head BS-2740 develops up
to 150 feet of head, delivering up to 250 gpm of liquid, while the
standard version pumps up to 600 gpm.

Air tools
Kaeser Compressors
offers a line of air tools that includes paving breakers, rock drills,
rivet busters, trench diggers, chipping hammers and backfill tampers.
These heavy-duty tools are suited for construction and site work. The
paving breakers are available in 50-, 60- and 90-pound models and are
designed to reduce fatigue, increase productivity and lower noise levels
without compromising performance. The valves, pistons and other moving
parts are made from shock-resistant tool steels.

Engine
Briggs & Stratton
introduces its first electronic fuel injection model as an extension of
its Vanguard 3/LC 3-cylinder, liquid-cooled commercial engine line.
Developed in conjunction with Daihatsu, the Vanguard 3/LC EFI engine is
capable of delivering increased fuel economy -- up to 30-percent fuel
savings, depending on duty cycle -- with increased responsiveness at
all engine speeds. The EFI system automatically adjusts engine settings
in real time for quick, no-choke cold starts, and to compensate for
altitude and environmental variables.

Generator
Magnum Products
introduces two models of its new flip-hood/flip-tongue generator, the
MMG 35FH (pictured) and MMG 55FH. The generators' two access hoods flip
open to allow for unobstructed accessibility to the generators' internal
components. The front service hood flips open, providing complete
accessibility to perform daily operator checks and routine maintenance.
The back hood flips open to provide access to the generator end and
electrical connections for full service. Magnum's flip-hood/flip-tongue
design facilitates service and maintenance, and lower transportations
cost, increasing the rental center's return on investment. Both 35 and
50 kVA Perkins engine options are available.

Welding power source
The Miller Electric CST
280 Stick/TIG welding power source is now available in an 8-arc rack
configuration. The 625-pound unit has a footprint of 46 inches by 26 1/2
inches and provides a transportable solution for construction
professionals. The 8-Pack Rack supplies power to the eight CST 280s
through one main disconnect box with circuit breakers for each power
source.

Stump grinder
Bandit Industries' new
stump grinder Model HB20 SideWinder offers a pivot-action base, allowing
the operator to keep the wheelbase stationary while using a smooth
gliding motion back and forth to grind stumps. The user can position the
HB20 in close proximity to the stump, release the pivot pin, and swing
the handlebars from side to side. Traditional handlebar units require
additional effort from the operator to reposition the entire machine,
including the undercarriage, especially on uneven terrain. The HB20 is
available with a 20-hp Kohler gas engine and a 19-inch cutterhead with
24 teeth. Compact and maneuverable, the handlebar unit can grind
isolated stumps in hard-to-reach locations.

Trailer security
The Trailer Trap is
designed to reduce theft of towed rental equipment through a new concept
in trailer security. The Trailer Trap anchors to the ground at rental
facilities or to a steel plate for portable field use. The unit folds
down, allowing the trailer or vehicle to drive over it, then pivots
upright and the trailer coupler is secured to an integral trailer ball.
A thick steel wrap-around shield pivots completely over the coupler and
is secured with a restricted access stainless-steel barrel lock.

JCB High Mobility Engineer
Excavator Deployed For Active Duty
Congressman Jack Kingston inaugurated the first High Mobility
Engineer Excavator as it came off the production line in Pooler, Ga.
Local officials and business leaders looked on as the 12 ton machine
built to be combat ready pushed through the gates of JCB's North American Headquarters.
Guests watched in awe as Kingston raced down I-95 aboard the new
machine. The machine then took a sharp turn to barrel through the gates
of the JCB campus and delivered the congressman on the doorstep of the
factory where guests were awaiting his arrival.
The High Mobility Engineer Excavator (HMEE) is a specialized backhoe
produced specifically for the United States Military. HMEE is capable of
speeds in excess of 60 mph allowing it to keep pace with military
convoys without the need for transportation by a truck and low-loader
trailer. Its mobility, coupled with its ability to work in the toughest
terrain makes this a very valuable machine for the military.
The HMEE combines the capabilities of the world-renowned JCB backhoe
loader and the innovative high-speed JCB Fastrac agricultural tractor,
which is the only tractor to have full suspension and anti-lock brakes,
according to the company.
The 12-ton HMEE boasts a 6.7-litre diesel engine and four-wheel drive,
has 6 speeds forward, 2 speeds in reverse, lift more than two tonnes and
digs to a depth of 13 feet. The HMEE also features three different steer
modes: 2-wheel, 4-wheel and crab steer. It is designed to be
air-transportable by Hercules C-130 aircraft. The JCB HMEE incorporates
armour protection into the base design of the Roll Over Protective
Structure of the operator's cab, dramatically increasing the ability to
withstand enemy fire and the threat of roadside bombs.
"This thing sells itself. It's a piece of equipment that we need now, in
Iraq and Afghanistan," Rep. Jack Kingston, R-GA said at an inauguration
ceremony held at JCB America's headquarters in Georgia.
The contract was awarded to JCB in October of 2005. With a base value of
$160 million, it is the largest single contract in JCB's history. The
production phase of the contract is 5 years, with two additional option
years. Production is expected to last through 2012 with additional
contracts for Contractor's Logistic Support and Spare Parts currently
under negotiation.
Graeme Macdonald, president of JCB The Americas, said "This project has
been a great learning experience for us because prior to this, JCB The
Americas had never tendered a U.S. Military Contract. Our Savannah team
is extremely proud of this machine. Being able to produce a high quality
product that has met and exceeded the US Army's guidelines is a
tremendous accomplishment."
