Wheel loaders
The new W170B and W190B wheel loaders from New Holland are designed with more power, improved functionality and larger, more accommodating cabs than previous models. The Tier 3-compliant engines are rated at 195 gross hp for the W170B and 227 hp for the W190B. The W170B model is available in both standard and tool carrier configurations.

"While these new units are more powerful than before, they also deliver better fuel economy," says Eric Winkler, New Holland brand marketing manager. "Both machines come standard with four power modes. By utilizing the proper power mode, operators can match machine performance to their needs while maximizing fuel efficiency."

Lifting
Fork protectors
Keytroller's fork protector clamps over the heel and elbow areas of the fork to protect the fork from excessive wear. It has a sacrificial steel alloy casting that wears in place of the fork. The fork protector is easy to install and can be used on any internal combustion or electric forklift. The combination of the side screws tightening and the casting's internal radius prevents slippage of the device. When one side of the sacrificial alloy wears out, it can be turned around to wear the other side. The fork protectors are available in 4-, 5- and 6-inch widths.

    Product Spotlight
Pettibone Transfers Materials for Masonry Crew
Nearly 250 years ago, Fort Ticonderoga was built by the French between Lake Champlain and Lake George in New York. Control of the fort changed from French to British hands, and in 1775 it became the site of America's first victory of the Revolutionary War. The fort played a pivotal role for American forces during this period. According to Lisa Simpson, director of external affairs and marketing at Fort Ticonderoga, the fort was an important staging area for the American army as well as the site where America's first navy vessels were rigged and fitted.

In October 2005, construction began on the Deborah Clarke Mars Education Center at Fort Ticonderoga. The Education Center will be constructed on the site where the "King's warehouse" once stood. Historical records show that the building was blown up by the French as they evacuated the fort during a British attack in 1759. The $20.8 million restoration project is the fort's largest since the 1930s and should be complete in the fall of 2007. The facility will offer visitors a modern, year-round experience for learning about the fort's -- and America's -- past.

Northeast Masonry of Pelham, N.H., was awarded the masonry contract for the restoration project. Northeast Masonry is known for their commercial and restoration work throughout New England. To get the job done, Northeast Masonry rented a Pettibone T8044 from Power Up Equipment Rental in Auburn, N.H. The T8044 has a maximum capacity of 8,000 pounds, a lift height of 44 feet and offers 70 inches of horizontal boom travel.

Like any jobsite, the construction project at Fort Ticonderoga poses its share of obstacles for the crew. The physical condition of the site causes the most stress. The restoration site rests on bed of clay, making for dramatically different conditions from one day to the next. At times the rain turns the site into a mud pit; other times it's a dust bowl. With 21 inches of ground clearance, the T8044 maneuvers in all conditions.

Careful attention has to be paid while maneuvering equipment around the jobsite. The fort's historic grounds and structures are not the only concern for Northeast Masonry. During the tourist season the construction crew must keep the safety of the fort's visitors constantly in mind.

Northeast Masonry has benefited most from the T80 44's boom-transferring feature. It allows close access to the structure and, once positioned, transfers the boom out for precise placement of materials. The T8044 operator, Freeman Vicaire, lifts containers of mortar, pallets of limestone, and other materials, and says the machine has smooth hydraulics. "The Pettibone is a fast machine and very responsive," he says.

"I'm really impressed by the rear visibility of the machine," says Northeast Masonry owner, Gill Gagne. The visibility of the machine allows operators to survey the entire worksite for obstacles while transporting materials.

When restoration is completed in the fall of 2007, Fort Ticonderoga will offer visitors a year-round peek at America's past. Located in Baraga, Mich., Pettibone manufactures a full line of fixed-boom and transfer-boom, rough-terrain telehandlers, Cary-Lift material handlers, and Speed Swing railroad maintenance equipment.
