Notes From the Editors

Well, the first day of AES has come to a close and it feels like it just opened. The aisles have been packed, the buzz is legitimate and we're told that people are buying again.

A few early notes: The day started with EAW showing its much-talked about entry into front-of-house consoles, the umx.96 see the Mix Blog for details); and it concluded with Digidesign's release of Pro Tools 7. In between, JBL showed off its new monitor in the LSR series and Yamaha keeps moving forward with digital solutions...namely the MCL digital board. Presonus showed the gangable 4-channel Inspire FireWire I/O box for $199. Schoeps has a new ultralight shotgun, the CMIT 5U, with DSP-based filtering and rolloff. Sony showed its new PCM-D1 portable field recorder. Yow! About $2k, including 4-gig Flash memory off rechargeable or AA batteries. Linear PCM recording or compressed audio files. Auralex showed its new line of materials developed by Russ Berger.

There's so much more being shown...from SSL's new C300 post console to Shure's new UHF-R wireless launch.

Check out our blog, and we'll keep the hits coming.

AES BLOGGERS

Here are some excerpts from todays' bloggers

Ron Kuper, Cakewalk: This AES we're proud to be showing SONAR 5, which is pretty much a big watershed release for us. There's a lot of really interesting technology -- and of course features -- in this new release.

The first techie accomplishment in SONAR 5 is our native x64 support. There has been a great deal of buzz around "64 bit" in the last few years, and we were first to show a native x64 DAW back in January with the SONAR x64 Technology Preview. Well, today I'm proud to announce that we're shipping this innovative new version.

Dave Malekpour, PAD: In addition to our core business of providing refurbished & warranted Certified Pre Owned SSL consoles, we have been building a lot of custom main monitors that are designed by George Augsberger and Dynaudio Acoustics, and providing complete studio equipment packages combining cutting edge new gear with refurbished vintage classics.

Chris Walsh, AXI: I'm excited for AXI coming into this AES show. Tube Tech has joined our family of companies. The tradition of quality first tube processor continues with their newest products. The MMC1A offers their multi-band compressor coupled with the micpre. This is an especially good solution for the small studio (and is nominated for a TEC award).

John Meyer, Meyer Sound: Hi, I'm John Meyer from Meyer Sound. It's great to be back in New York. I remember when the AES shows were in the Waldorf, and we had a small table, and demo booths that were hotel rooms. It was at the AES where we first demoed our Ultra Monitor stage monitor by playing music into it to 110dB SPL and then having someone come up to the microphone and singing into the microphone -- and they could hear themselves! It was the first stage monitor with an external processor.
