First Up Wilma Slams Cancun and Florida; Good News re NOLA With next to no information coming out of hard-hit Cancun and Cozumel after Hurricane Wilma slammed into Mexico's Yucatan peninsula this past weekend, U.S. offices of hotels and resorts located there were unable to assess the damage sustained by major meeting properties. And, as of this morning, it was too early to assess damages to hard-hit Naples and Southeast Florida hotel properties. Much of the region was still without power. Marriott International Inc. said on its Web site early Monday that two Marriott hotels and one Ritz-Carlton hotel in Cancun and three Marriott hotels and one Ritz-Carlton hotel in Florida, had been evacuated, and that the following were closed: JW Marriott Cancun Resort & Spa, CasaMagna Cancun Marriott Resort, and The Ritz-Carlton, Cancun. "Due to early damage assessments, we anticipate these Cancun hotels will remain closed through December 31, 2005," the statement said. "Groups booked at the Cancun property are being worked with to move them, at least through the end of December," said Vivian A. Deuschl, corporate vice president, public relations, Ritz-Carlton. According to Walter Holtsmaster and Pat Fisch, International Destinations Inc., the North American office for the Cancun Convention and Visitors Bureau, as of midday Monday "neither the regular telephone lines or cell phones are working, and e-mails to our contacts are returned as their servers are down for the time being. The only information we're getting is via Mexico City, where our contact says most of the hotels have sustained damage to their lobbies. He says all hotels in the Cancun Hotel Zone and Riviera Maya had their lobbies destroyed by the hurricane. In downtown Cancun the water grew to three feet deep but almost all has receded." Holtsmaster adds that Cancun "will fare better than most places hit by Wilma as all of the utilities are underground, so they are less affected. It will take a day or two to reestablish communications, and by that time the hotels will have assessed their damage and will have a better idea of exactly when they will begin operating again." On a happier note, the American Library Association has decided, after a recent site inspection, not to cancel its annual conference, scheduled for New Orleans in June 2006, and expected to draw 22,000. "If we truly care about the residents of New Orleans, the best thing that the association and its members can do is to go to New Orleans and lead the reconstruction by example. Our conference will help to provide the jobs and tax revenues needed if residents are to reestablish their lives and for the city to fully restore services, including library services," said ALA's president. On Our Radar Screen EIBTM and Barcelona: What's New The meeting and incentive industry convenes in Barcelona November 29 to December 1 for EIBTM 2005, The Global Meetings & Incentive Exhibition, allowing its 3,000 global suppliers and expected 6,000 hosted buyers to get down to business. More than 95 countries will be represented. As usual, organizers have some new ideas to keep the exhibition fresh. New this year:
EIBTM is in its sixth year of sponsoring the Worldwide Technology Watch, a competition to find the most innovative new technology in the meetings industry. The 2005 winner, announced in advance of the December exhibition, is a 3D room-diagramming software called Viven that the company hopes will change the way event designers communicate their ideas to clients and suppliers. Been There Boston Buoyed by Cruise Ships By Barbara Brewer In early October two notable ships were berthed in Boston's cruise ship area near the new Boston Convention & Exhibition Center. Cunard Line's Queen Mary 2 and Crystal Cruises' Crystal Symphony. At a noon event in the lovely Commodore Club, fore ship on deck 9 on the QM2, Commodore Ronald Warwick and representatives from the Boston Pilot's Association and the Massachusetts Port Authority exchanged gifts and plaques commemorating the ship's maiden voyage to Boston. (In 1969, Commodore Warwick was onboard the Queen Elizabeth 2 when she made her maiden voyage into Boston--his father, Commodore W.E. Warwick, was at the helm.) The Queen Mary 2 can claim all the superlatives: longest, tallest, heaviest--and of course, they say, grandest. For more, click here. ADVERTISEMENT

Hot Shots Like Las Vegas Needs the Help Michael D. Uhl has been named regional vice president of HelmsBriscoe, the giant site selection company, heading up the Las Vegas office. The 21-year hospitality industry vet was most recently executive vice president of convention and travel industry sales for Caesars Entertainment in Las Vegas. "I was responsible for all convention, wholesale, and Internet sales for Bally's/Paris/Flamingo/Caesars Palace and the Las Vegas Hilton," he says. "I joined HelmsBriscoe due to their outstanding reputation, the opportunity with the ever-expanding inventory in Las Vegas, and, most importantly, because of the respect I have for each member of our executive team," says Uhl. "Our mission will be to provide assistance in all facets of site selection and contract negotiation for meeting executives, partner with key Las Vegas properties, hire outstanding sales executives, and drive additional convention business to our city." Blogged! Should We Just Shut Up Already? By Sue Pelletier While he puts it much more nicely in this Fast Company Now post, I think Adam Hanft is onto something: A little silence could go a long way toward making a meeting more productive... The Bair Essentials Rebrand, Rename, Revamp: Meet The New Meetings Group By Betsy Bair, Editorial Director, The Meetings Group We've been busy here at The Meetings Group. We've changed the name of Insurance Conference Planner magazine to Financial & Insurance Meetings, (click here for the lowdown), effective with the November/December issue. While we were changing the name of one of our five niched meeting magazines, we thought it was time to upgrade all our logos. Nameplates are what my art directors call them, the big titles that emblazon our covers and all of our collateral materials and serve as the face of our brand. After all, while each magazine and title is differentiated by its editorial and circulation and therefore offers its own brand and voice, we are part of a print and e-publications group, from which we derive all sorts of benefits and resources that we couldn't afford without each other. While each niche is a brand, The Meetings Group, is the uber brand (and it's improved its look, too!). Gone are those acronyms from our covers, although we'll still use them inside, since Corporate Meetings and Incentives is kind of a mouthful (but CMI isn't, especially in second and later references) and we're pleased to show off the new nameplates with all of our November and December issues. We also asked those same hardworking art directors to use the stylish new logos in the names of the magazines' e-newsletter spin-offs, too. And, oh, by the way, we added, "Can you adapt the MeetingsNet logo to go with the new magazine logos?" Our Web site is also going through an incredible redesign, with all sorts of new functionality, which will also be launched in November, under the guidance of our Web editor, Sue Pelletier. But more about that at a later date. So next Tuesday, when you get MeetingsNet Extra, don't be shocked! Don't hit delete! Know that it's the same news, tidbits, commentaries, and whatever else we feel like throwing into the mix, but with a facelift. And the thanks for our rebranding go to two of the nicest and most talented art directors I have had the pleasure to work with: Sharon Carlson and Scott Raymond. Bravo! |
