BLS Releases Real
Construction Output Projection
According to projections released by the Bureau of
Labor
Statistics (BLS), real construction output is expected to increase at a
rate of 2.2% per year from 2004 to 2014. The demand for non-residential
structures is the catalyst behind the projected growth. Stagnating over
the last decade, total non-residential investment is expected to grow
by
1.6% per year from 2004 to 2014. Shouldering this sector's growth is
the
delayed replacement and remodeling of industrial plants; greater demand
for aging-population-related nursing, extended care, and
high-technology
medical treatment facilities; and the need to construct new schools in
faster growing regions of the United States. BLS estimates residential
construction to average 1.8% growth over the 10-year period.

Regional
Development Corp. Approves Wind Research and Training Center
A feasibility study conducted by the Regional
Development Corp., a private nonprofit, economic development
organization based in Santa Fe, N.M., with ties to Los Alamos National
Laboratory, recently gave Mesalands Community College, Tucamari, N.M.,
a
positive report for the development of its North American Wind Research
and Training Center. According to the study, Mesalands' location near
New Mexico's three large wind farms make it ideally suited for a
training center. The results of the study will be used to secure
financing for the center, estimated at $9.6 million, not including the
price of a wind turbine. General Electric Corp. has quoted $1.7 million
for a wind turbine capable of generating 1.5MW. New Mexico state Rep.
Brian Moore, (R-Clayton), has agreed to sponsor a capital outlay
request
of up to $12 million during the 2006 legislative session. Capital
outlay
requests are financed through the state severance tax, which comes from
oil and natural gas revenues.
VDC Publishes
Report on Power- over-Ethernet
Natick, Mass.-based technology market research firm,
Venture Development Corp., recently released "PoE: Global Market
Opportunity Analysis," which examines the impact a higher power
standard
may have on the marketplace. Power-over-Ethernet (PoE), or Active
Ethernet, eliminates the need to run 110/220 VAC power to Wireless
Access Points and other devices on a wired LAN. The report estimates
that during a four-year period, powered device sales may exhibit a 38%
compound annual growth rate, and in 2008 the market may exceed $5.2
billion in revenue. The later portion of sales would be derived
primarily from new applications or powered devices that will use the
new
higher power standard. Of the 46 applications analyzed by the report,
19
may potentially be affected by the adoption and growth rates of PoE
Plus. To view the report, visit VDC's Web
site.
NEMA Reports
Expanded Lighting Equipment Shipments in Third Quarter
NEMA's Lighting Systems Index increased 2.4% in the
third quarter of 2005. The Rosslyn, Va.-based association credits the
boom in single-family housing construction for the increased demand in
lighting equipment. In addition, non-residential construction has
slowly
begun to increase demand, although still performing below previous
expectations. To view the full index, visit NEMA's Web

Business Briefs
Aurora, Ohio-based Technical Consumer Products, Inc.
(TCP) recently received accreditation from the Underwriter's Laboratory
(UL) for its UL testing facility at its corporate headquarters. TCP
anticipates that the on-site testing lab will shorten the UL
certification process for the company's line of energy-efficient
lighting products from 12 weeks to three. At the lab, TCP has the
capability to test lamps, fixtures, and ballasts for both indoor and
outdoor applications. The first TCP products to be tested at its
on-site
lab included five individual models of compact fluorescent two-piece
SpringLamps. Currently, there are plans to expand the lab's range to
include a mold stress test oven, recessed fixture test apparatus, and
equipment to double the lab's temperature testing levels. For more

BLS Survey Says
Workplace Injuries and Illnesses Declined in 2004
The number of reported workplace injuries and illnesses
in the private sector declined by 2.5% in 2004, according to the Bureau
of Labor Statistics' (BLS) most recent report, "Survey of Occupational
Injuries and Illnesses," issued Nov. 17. The rate of private-sector
workplace injuries and illnesses also experienced what the Department
of
Labor is calling a "statistically significant decline." A total of 4.3
million non-fatal injuries and illnesses were reported in private
industry workplaces during 2004 -- down from 4.4 million in 2003. Those
injuries and illnesses occurred at a rate of 4.8 cases per 100
equivalent full-time workers, a decline from the previous rate of 5.0
in
2003, according to BLS. Of the 4.4 million private-sector workplace
injuries and illnesses reported, 2.2 million required days away from
work, transfer to another job, restricted duties, or a combination of
these actions. The remaining 2 million injuries and illnesses did not
result in any time away from work, says BLS.
