ANSI Bestows
Accreditation on Green Building Initiative
ANSI recently recognized the Green Building Initiative
as an accredited national standards developer. In response, the Green
Building Initiative submitted an application to make Green Globes, the
Web-based environmental design and rating system for commercial
buildings, an American National Standard. Currently, the Green Building
Initiative is assembling a technical committee composed of users,
producers, and interested third parties to oversee the standard. The
process to establish Green Globes as a national standard may take up to
two years.

AeA Reports Gain
in Jobs for U.S. Tech Industry
In AeA's ongoing Competitiveness Series, the nonprofit
high-tech trade association reports a gain of nearly 190,000 jobs in
the
U.S. technology sector between January 2004 and June 2005, for a total
of 5.72 million. The association cites that 21,800 net jobs were added
by technology manufacturers and 167,000 net jobs were added by
technology service providers. According to AeA, the data, collected by
the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, indicates that the technology
industry has generated a net increase in jobs over the last six-, 12-,
and 18-month time spans.

Electricity Initiative Announces Mission for Transformation of U.S.
Electricity Supply
The Galvin Electricity Initiative recently outlined its
two-phase plan, "Transforming Electricity Service Reliability and Value
for the 21st Century." According to the plan, the first phase will
examine technical innovations that are important to the economy's
energy
demands, particularly within the next 10 to 20 years. The second phase
will develop an achievable blueprint of technologies, policies, and
incentives. The work plan for the project is available for download at

When the U.S. Census Bureau released the data for
July's
Construction Put in Place report, the property damage and materials
shortages
caused by Hurricane Katrina had not yet played a part in the numbers.
Total construction spending in July was $1.09 trillion, up 0.5% from
June and a 6% spike from July 2004. From June to July, new residential
spending was up 2.2% and new non-residential spending dropped -0.4%.
The
totals for the past year have been charted in the line graph below. All
values have been calculated at a seasonally adjusted annual rate.

Siemens Power Generation recently announced an
agreement
to provide FPL Energy, a subsidiary of Miami-based FPL Group, Inc.,
with
2.3MW Mk II wind turbines totaling up to 600MW. This is Siemens' first
wind-power contract in the Americas region since it acquired Bonus
Energy last December. Delivery of the wind turbines will begin in
2006.

Labor Addresses National Safety Council
U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao recently spoke to
attendees of the National Safety Council's 93rd annual Congress and
Expo, held in Orlando, Fla., about the importance of maintaining a
"culture of safety" as experienced workers retire. According to Chao,
retiring baby boomers are taking with them safety and health knowledge
that is not easily replaced by less-experienced workers. Chao applauded
agencies using Web-based training tools to teach safety and health
information to the technology-savvy younger generation.
