U.S. Battery
Demand to Reach $14.8 Billion in 2009
According to "The Freedonia Focus on Batteries," a
study
from the Freedonia Group, U.S. demand for primary and secondary
batteries is projected to increase 5.9% annually through 2009 to $14.8
billion. Among the factors driving this growth are strong demand for
battery-powered products, such as cellular phones and digital cameras,
and increasing production of electrical and electronic devices. Market
gains are also expected to be supported by an ongoing shift in the
product mix toward more expensive batteries, such as lithium-based
cells. Sales of secondary batteries are forecast to rise faster than
primary batteries through 2009, due in part to strong growth in the use
of high-drain portable electronic products. Secondary battery demand
could also be supported by reductions in the time required to recharge
batteries, making secondary types more appealing to consumers and
nearly
as convenient as primary cells.
The study states that although lead-acid batteries will account for
nearly 60% of all secondary battery sales in 2009, lithium ion, lithium
polymer, and nickel-metal hydride batteries will have the strongest
rates of growth. It predicts consumer applications will account for
more
than 70% of all primary battery sales in 2009. While alkaline batteries
could remain the dominant primary battery type, other types like
zinc-air may account for an incrasingly large share of demand. For more
information on the study, visit the
Freedonia Group's Web site.

FM Approvals
Accredited by Standards Council of Canada
The Standards Council of Canada (SCC) has accredited FM
Approvals as a testing and certification organization. The
accreditation
means FM Approvals meets the SCC's administrative and technical
criteria
for hazardous-location electrical equipment covering all protection
methods recognized in Canada, electrical and electronic products, and
fire-alarm signaling equipment. Electrical and electronic product
manufacturers seeking third-party certification in Canada and the
United
States may now go through the testing firm. For more information, visit
the SCC's Web site.
Region 5 IEEE WIE Seeks Affinity
Group
The coordinator for Women in Engineering (WIE) Region 5
is interested in establishing affinity groups in the southwestern
United
States. Currently, there are three groups: Central Texas, St. Louis,
and
South Plains, Texas. WIE nominates candidates for various IEEE awards
and office positions, encourages active participation, sponsors social
events at various IEEE conferences, and participates in career guidance
events. To form a chapter in your section, a petition must be signed
and
submitted. Both men and women are
welcome in WIE. The petition form and additional details can be found
on
the IEEE Web site by
using the search field for "WIE." For more information about forming a
chapter, contact WIE at women@ieee.org. For more information
on becoming a liaison in Region 5, contact Coordinator Sandra "Candy"
Robinson at (817) 655-7190 or at sandra.l.robinson@lmco.com.

Connecticut Light & Power Seeks
Proposals for Round Three Electrical Energy Efficiency Projects
Connecticut Light & Power (CL&P), as manager of the
Conservation and Load Management Fund, is soliciting proposals from any
qualified party for electrical energy efficiency projects to be
implemented at CL&P electric distribution customer facilities statewide
in CL&P's service territory. Projects under this program will be
awarded
on a competitive basis based on level of utility incentive requested,
cost effectiveness, project comprehensiveness, environmental benefits,
and project timing. Proposals will be accepted in two proposal tracks:
Project and Study. The project track is intended for projects that have
been fully analyzed from an energy and cost perspective. The study
track
is for projects that need additional study to determine their
feasibility. To be eligible for participation in this RFP, the CL&P
customer must have a billing demand greater than 200kW, and the
proposal
must provide an energy savings reduction of at least 100,000kWh per
year
or a peak demand reduction of 100kW or more. Multiple customers or
customer sites may be aggregated, under certain conditions, to meet
these requirements. Full details as to the conditions and requirements
of this RFP are contained in the Bidders' Package, now available and
open to CL&P electric distribution customer facilities statewide.
Proposals for this round must be received by 2 p.m. EST on July 19. To
download the Bidders' Package, visit CL&P's
Web site.
