IEEE to Revise
"Red Book" Standard for Electrical Distribution in Industrial
Plants
When industrial plant engineers design and analyze the
electrical power distribution systems in their facilities, they often
turn to the IEEE "Red Book" for guidance. This resource addresses basic
electrical system considerations and recommends practices for planning
power distribution,
including criteria to ensure preservation of property, and information
on voltage considerations, short-circuit current calculations, and
grounding and harmonics. To ensure this reference reflects the latest
technology, the IEEE is revising 16 chapters of the Red Book, also
known
as IEEE P141, "Recommended Practice for Electric Power Distribution for
Industrial Plants." The updated standard will reflect the latest
practices and technologies, such as new fusing, breakers and other
protective elements, control systems, and communication and monitoring
methods. Discussion of these items will include their advantages and
disadvantages under various conditions. For more information, visit the
Web site.

Simple. Reliable. Accurate.
AEMC's Clamp-On Ground Resistance Tester Model 3731 provides direct
reading of ground rod and grid resistance from 0.01 hms to 1200 hms.
Operation is simple and fast; there is no need for leads, auxiliary
rods
or disconnecting the service under test. It measures leakage current
flowing to ground or circulating in ground loops from 1mA to 30Arms.
The large jaw (1.25") accommodates ground conductors up to 1000MCM. The
Model 3731 includes both an alarm function and a memory function, which
will store up to 99 field measurements. Patented design. www.aemc.com
Ohio Grants
Extension
on Fuel Cell Initiative
Ohio Governor Bob Taft recently announced a three-year
extension of the Ohio Fuel Cell Initiative at the 2005 Ohio Fuel Cell
Coalition (OFCC) Symposium. This extension comes on the heels of two
new
Fuel Cell Initiative awards, worth a total of more than $2 million.
Created in 2002, the Ohio Fuel Cell Initiative is a $103 million
program
that aims to position Ohio as a national leader in the growing fuel
cell
industry and help spur economic growth and job creation in the state.
To
date, more than $38 million in Fuel Cell Initiative funds have been
awarded to projects across the state.
The Initiative is an integral part of Governor Taft's Third Frontier
Project, a $1.1 billion program designed to create jobs and
bring new products to market. This group recently approved $1.6 million
in operating funds for the Wright Fuel Cell Group, Ohio's Wright Center
of Innovation for fuel cells led by Case Western Reserve University.
Also
receiving funding through the Fuel Cell Initiative is Mound Technical
Solutions (MTS), located in Miamisburg, Ohio. MTS received a $600,000
Third Frontier Action Fund award by the Commission to develop,
manufacture, and market the next generation modular Comprehensive Fuel
Cell Test System.
Fluor Moves
Headquarters To Dallas/Ft. Worth
In an effort to put executives closer to customers in
central and eastern parts of the country, Fluor Corp. will relocate its
corporate headquarters from Aliso Viejo, Calif. to the Dallas/Ft. Worth
metropolitan area as early as 2006. According to Alan L. Boeckmann,
chairman and CEO, this announcement reflects the company's strategy to
improve operational efficiency and position it more effectively to serve
global clients. "While we highly value our West Coast clients, most of
our North American customers are
clustered in Texas and on the East Coast, which can be more efficiently
accessed from the central time zone," he said. "In addition, the
Dallas/Ft. Worth Airport provides optimal travel connections to
customers in all other global locations."
The company currently has 490 employees at its California headquarters.
Of these, 210 will be reassigned or relocated locally.
Approximately 80 employees will be reassigned to other Fluor locations.
About 100 will be relocated to the company's new headquarters in Texas,
and it’s anticipated that as many as 100 employees will leave the
company.
Fluor expects to hire about 70 employees at its new location. A final
decision on location within the Dallas/Ft. Worth metropolitan area will
be made in the next several weeks. For more information, see the original
report.
