New
Alliance Supports Commercialization of Photovoltaics
To make the future bright for solar power, photovoltaic
manufacturers recently launched a new organization geared at helping
the
United States achieve an annual 1 gigawatt market for distributed solar
electricity by 2010. The primary mission of the Americans for Solar
Power-PV Manufacturers Alliance (ASPv-PVMA) is to establish sustainable
mainstream markets for cost-effective distributed solar power. The
group
plans to conduct research and educate opinion leaders and the public
about the benefits of solar electricity. In 2005, the alliance will
focus on
California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's Million Solar Roof's plan
as well as regulatory initiatives in solar hot spots such as New
Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Texas, and Colorado. For more
information, visit the ASPv-PVMA Web
site.

Measure Low Resistance With High Accuracy
The 10A Micro-Ohmmeter Model 6250 measures low resistance with results
within 0.05%. Resistance measurements are automatically calculated,
taking into account the measurement value, ambient temperature, metal
type and metal temperature co-efficient. Metal temperature can be
manually entered by the operator or directly measured with an optional
RTD temperature probe. Uniquely designed to conduct tests on both
resistive and inductive material, with operator selection directly from
the front panel. Up to 1,500 measurements can be stored and printed
directly to a printer or from a PC. www.aemc.com
Long Island Power
Authority Plans the Nation's Largest Fuel Cell Project
After installing fuel cell units at hospitals,
universities, town halls, and a fast-food restaurant, the Long Island
Power Authority (LIPA) is working on one of the largest fuel cell
generation projects in the country. The LIPA issued a request for
proposals for a 10 MW facility that could provide enough electricity to
power 10,000 homes. The fuel cell units will be installed at LIPA's
substation in West Babylon, N.Y., and will be operational by next
summer.
Proposal Could
Simplify Washington State's Energy Connection Standards
The House of Representatives is considering a new bill
to simplify standards for small power producers to connect to the
electrical grid and expand net metering to 100kW. Jeff Morris
(D-Anacortes), the chair of the Technology, Energy, and Communications
committee, sponsored House Bill 1011 to help the state of
Washington
to become a hub for testing and deploying new energy technologies in
North America. Today, a company would have to contend with 63 different
connection standards when installing new electricity generation
technologies in the state of Washington. This bill would create one
standard for every utility in the state. For more information and to
see
a copy of the bill, visit the Web
site for the Washington State Legislature.
