Solar Homes Bill
Could Heat Up California's Photovoltaic Market
California's solar energy market could soon get a boost
from new legislation, which calls for placing solar panels on 1 million
new and existing homes over the next 13 years. The bill, which was
passed by the Senate and supported by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, will
require builders to install photovoltaic systems on 15% of all new
single-family homes by 2006 and 55% of the homes by 2010. Builders must
also offer solar panels as an option on all new houses in every
subdivision with at least 25 homes by 2008. "Solar power is much more
cost-effective when included in the construction of new homes," says
Sen. Kevin Murray, D-Los Angeles, who sponsored Senate Bill 1652. "This
bill simply requires that builders phase in solar systems during
construction, reducing energy costs and air pollution at the same
time."

average year-to-year sales growth rate of 1.4% in 2003, as compared to
an 8% decline in sales from 2001 to 2002. To learn more about these top
players, ElectricalZone readers are invited to purchase an exclusive
research report on EC&M's
Web site. The report includes a table that ranks the firms by 2003
revenues, detailed capsule summaries, colorful project photos, a list
of
the companies' contact information, and a sample cover letter and
survey.
NAED Launches
Campaign to Work with Electrical Contracting Firms
The National Association of Electrical Distributors
(NAED) is working to raise awareness among the electrical contracting
community about the value of working with an NAED-approved distributor.
The association recently published a brochure, which directs
contractors
to an online searchable directory of
NAED-approved distributors. The publication also lists tips on how
electrical contractors can reduce labor costs through clarifying
specifications, preplanning for special needs, using a distributor's
expertise, and scheduling material to be delivered directly to the
jobsite.
