CSI Releases
Information on the 2004 Edition of MasterFormat
MasterFormat users don't have to wait until later this
year to familiarize themselves with the new specification-writing
standard. The Construction Specification Institute (CSI) has spent
three
years updating and expanding the section numbers and titles for
the 2004 edition of MasterFormat, and to give users the opportunity to
preview the changes, CSI has released the information on its Web site. The new edition
of MasterFormat will reflect the advances in construction technology
since the 1995 edition and feature a six-digit rather than a five-digit
numbering system to create room to allow users to organize more
detailed
specifications. CSI will expand the scope of MasterFormat to cover not
only
nonresidential buildings, but also engineering-related construction.
The
standard will also include an expanded number of areas like computer
and
telecommunications networks, integrated building automation systems,
and
electronic safety and security.

Eye on Safety
Electrical contracting firms often educate their
employees about jobsite safety during Tool Box Talks. Coming up with a
new topic every week, however, can be a challenge for project managers.
To make it easier to organize these safety
meetings, a Web site called ToolBox
Talks.com offers a list of 23 different topics that are
specifically
designed for the electrical industry. Project managers
or safety directors can simply print out the free worksheets and
distribute them to their team during a Tool Box Talk. The topics
include
equipment installation and maintenance, preventing high-voltage
accidents, and working in confined spaces. For more
information, visit the Web
site.
