CSI Releases Information on the 2004 Edition of MasterFormat
MasterFormat users don't have to wait until later this year to familiarize themselves with the new specification-writing standard. The Construction Specification Institute (CSI) has spent three years updating and expanding the section numbers and titles for the 2004 edition of MasterFormat, and to give users the opportunity to preview the changes, CSI has released the information on its Web site. The new edition of MasterFormat will reflect the advances in construction technology since the 1995 edition and feature a six-digit rather than a five-digit numbering system to create room to allow users to organize more detailed specifications. CSI will expand the scope of MasterFormat to cover not only nonresidential buildings, but also engineering-related construction. The standard will also include an expanded number of areas like computer and telecommunications networks, integrated building automation systems, and electronic safety and security.

If you think your electrical contracting firm is one of the largest contractors in the country and have 2003 annual sales of at least $50 million, take the opportunity to give your company the recognition it deserves within the electrical industry by taking EC&M's 2004 Top 50 survey online. If you have any questions or would like to receive a Word version of the survey, please e-mail Amy Fischbach. The deadline for submission of the survey is FRIDAY, JULY 23. See the 2003 list of the nation's largest electrical contracting firms.

ASA Educates Subcontractors on Contract Negotiations
Subcontractors can lose work and damage a long-term business relationship by practicing poor negotiation skills. To help you succeed in the business world, the American Subcontractors Association (ASA) has launched the Stand Up! campaign. The association will release monthly white papers on different contract-related topics like warranties, scheduling changes, payment terms, and lien waivers. Each of these papers will be published on the "Protect Your Rights" page on the ASA Web site.

Value of Construction Sets Record in May
The value of construction put in place set a fourth consecutive record in May, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Private residential construction experienced an annual gain of 14%, and private nonresidential construction slipped 0.4%. During the first five months of 2003, the office construction market posted an 8% year-to-date gain, commercial rose 1%, power construction dropped 6%, and education construction increased 3%.

    Eye on Safety
Electrical contracting firms often educate their employees about jobsite safety during Tool Box Talks. Coming up with a new topic every week, however, can be a challenge for project managers. To make it easier to organize these safety meetings, a Web site called ToolBox Talks.com offers a list of 23 different topics that are specifically designed for the electrical industry. Project managers or safety directors can simply print out the free worksheets and distribute them to their team during a Tool Box Talk. The topics include equipment installation and maintenance, preventing high-voltage accidents, and working in confined spaces. For more information, visit the Web site.

On the Job and Out to Lunch
Everyone makes mistakes. Some are just funnier than others. Got a story about a jobsite blunder you'd like to share? Send us your story of embarrassing on-the-job mistakes for use in EC&M's new column called Short Circuits. If we publish it, we'll send you a check for $25.
